The last one. Whatever the number in your document says right now, you showed up for all of it, and that already puts you somewhere most people never get.

So let’s talk about beginnings, which is a strange thing to bring up on the last day until you remember what actually happens when a challenge ends.

Twenty thousand words is not a book. It’s the beginning of one. What you built this week is the part most writers never make it to, the raw material that only exists because you sat down five days in a row and refused to wait for the mood to strike. Monday, that document was a blank page and a good intention. Today it’s something with weight, something you can hold, shape, and argue with. You can’t revise a draft you never wrote. You can’t fix a page that isn’t there. This week you made the thing that makes everything else happen.

Here’s what I want you to do before you close the laptop today. Don’t just hit your number and walk away. Write one line at the bottom of the doc about where the story goes next. Not the whole outline. One sentence, so that Monday morning you sit down to a road already pointing somewhere instead of a cliff. The end of this challenge is the beginning of the actual work, and the version of you a week from now will be grateful you left a note.

You did the hard part. You started. Most people are still waiting for the perfect time, and the perfect time is a story they tell themselves so they never have to find out what they’re made of. You already found out.

Finish today. Then keep going, because a finished draft is just a beginning wearing better clothes.

See you at eleven, one last time.

xo, Tasha

You can see the end from here, and that’s its own kind of dangerous.

Day four is where two writers show up. One is coasting, because the finish line is close enough to smell and the work suddenly feels optional. The other is white-knuckling it, because the finish line is close enough to smell and now there’s something to lose. Both of them are looking at the same thing. Only one of them is going to like Sunday.

So let’s talk about endings, since that’s what you’re writing toward whether your draft is finished this week or not.

An ending is not the place where the story stops. It’s the place where the story pays out. Everything you set up in the front half and complicated in the middle comes due right here, and the reason so many endings feel hollow is that the writer got tired and settled the debt too cheaply. The confession arrives, but nobody had to lose anything to say it. The couple gets together, but the thing that kept them apart just quietly evaporated instead of getting faced down.

Don’t let your characters off easy just because you’re tired. The wound you named on day one has to actually get touched before the ending means anything. Whatever your character has been protecting, whatever mask they’ve been wearing since the first scene, day four is where it comes off, on purpose, in front of the one person they least wanted to show. That’s the payout. That’s what all the earlier scenes were saving up for.

Same goes for you. You’ve been building toward this all week. Don’t get sloppy in the last stretch just because you can see the door. Finish the way you started, pointed at something.

The ending is a promise you made on page one. Today you keep it.

See you at eleven.

xo, Tasha

and hasn’t started being finished.

This is the day the doubt shows up sounding perfectly reasonable, suggesting that you go back and fix chapter one before you go any further, or that this whole book might be a mistake worth reconsidering. It always shows up now, because now is when the sugar wears off.

So let’s talk about the middle, since that’s where you are in the week and probably where you are in the book.

The middle is where most drafts go to die, and it’s almost never because the writer ran out of ideas. It’s because the middle is where you have to stop introducing and start complicating. Every scene in the front half was a promise. Everything in the middle has to be a cost. If your couple has been circling each other for six chapters and nothing has been taken from either of them yet, the story has gone flat and you can feel it, which is exactly why today feels like this.

Ask what it costs your characters to keep doing the thing they’ve been doing. Then make them pay it. Not a misunderstanding, not a phone call at the wrong moment. An actual loss, chosen, that they walk into with their eyes open because they can’t stand the alternative anymore. That’s what makes a middle move.

The same rule applies to you this week. You don’t get the ending because you deserve it. You get it because you kept showing up on the day it stopped feeling good.

Nobody who ever finished a draft did it because day three was fun.

See you at eleven.

xo, Tasha

The doc was open, the write-in was new, everybody was fresh and running on the good kind of nerves. Today you find out whether the thing you’re building can hold its own weight without the novelty carrying it.

So let’s talk about balance, because day two is where it either shows up or it doesn’t.

The scene you’re writing has to give the reader as much as it’s taking from you. If you’re bleeding four thousand words into a chapter where characters are just moving furniture around, the trade isn’t even. You’re spending real energy on something that pays the reader nothing back.

Same goes for your couple. Both of them have to be pulling their share. If one is doing all the wanting and all the risking while the other just receives, that’s a hostage situation with better lighting, not a romance. Ask who’s got something to lose in the scene you’re about to write. If it’s only one of them, you’ve got a problem the word count won’t fix.

And don’t rob today to pay yesterday. If you overran on day one and you’re sitting here on four hours of sleep and cold coffee feeling smug about it, you already broke the thing that was supposed to get you to Sunday. Twenty thousand words across five days is four thousand a day for a reason. The number is built to be sustainable, not heroic.

Even trade. Both sides of your story pulling. Both sides of your life still standing at the end of the week.

See you at eleven.

xo, Tasha

Twenty thousand words, five days, and a whole lot of people about to find out what they’re made of.

Here’s what I want you thinking about before you open the doc. The instinct on day one is to sprint like your rent is due. And honestly? Beautiful. Necessary. That’s how you break through the wall of a blank page. But you already know what happens around Saturday when you’ve been running on fumes and vibes since Wednesday morning. The engine cuts out because nothing was giving the burn any shape.

The fix isn’t slowing down. It’s knowing what you’re pointed at. There’s a real difference between “I’m going to write four thousand words today” and “I’m going to write the scene where she finally says the thing she’s been dancing around for six chapters, and it’s going to take about four thousand words to get there.” Same word count. Wildly different Sunday.

So before you start swinging today, spend five minutes deciding what the heat is actually for. What has to change in the story by the time you close the laptop? Not a page count. A change. A confession, a rupture, a door that can’t get closed again. Then let the sprint carry you toward it.

Write ugly. Write fast. But write toward something.

A house fire and a stove are both fire, but only one of them makes dinner!

Go cook something. See you at eleven.

xo, Tasha

P.S. with no risk behind it is just an announcement.

The break is where you put the risk in. It’s the point where the relationship looks genuinely impossible, where a reader who knows full well how this ends still feels their stomach drop, because for one real moment you made them believe these two might not make it.

This is the beat writers most often phone in, because they resent it. They know the couple ends up together, so staging a rupture feels like busywork, a box the structure demands. But think about the last time a movie had you genuinely worried about a couple you’d watched fall in love for ninety minutes, the pit-in-your-stomach kind of worried, even though you knew better. That dread is the whole product, and it doesn’t come free. Resentment shows up on the page as a break that feels imposed instead of earned, and readers can always tell the difference between a story pulling two people apart and an author doing it to them because the outline said so.

What a break actually is

The break is the moment the relationship collapses under the weight of the thing that was always going to test it. The keyword is always. A real break isn’t bad luck or bad timing or a villain’s scheme. It’s the wound coming due. Everything you planted in the simmer and cracked open in the boil arrives here to collect, and the couple comes apart along the exact fault line you built into them from the start.

If Character A’s whole armor is that they never let anyone close enough to leave them, the break is the moment they push Character B away right when it counts, because that’s what the armor is for. The rupture isn’t something that happens to the character. It’s something the character does, out of who they are, and that’s what makes it hurt instead of just happen.

Why it matters more than writers give it credit for

Structurally, the break is what gives the ending its meaning. Contrast is how emotion works. The reunion only sings if the reader has just spent real time in the possibility of no reunion at all. Skip the break, or fake it, and the ending arrives unearned, pleasant and weightless, the reading equivalent of a hug from someone who wasn’t really worried about you.

It’s also the deepest character reveal in the book. People show you who they are when the stakes are highest and the exits are closest. The break is where your leads do the thing they’ve spent the whole book being afraid they’d do, and the reader learns what these two are actually made of at the exact moment it’s most expensive to find out.

How to spot where yours is real and where it’s faking

The test is the same one that runs under this whole week: does it come from character or from plot? A break that grows out of the wound feels inevitable in hindsight, so a reader looking back thinks of course that’s what tore them apart, it was always going to be that. A break imposed from outside feels like a detour, and it has tells you already know by heart. The sudden ex who shows up for no reason except that the plot needed a grenade. The job offer three time zones away that materializes at the precise moment the story needs distance. The lie told for a reason that character would never in life actually buy. When the rupture leans on a coincidence or a contrivance instead of on who these people are, the reader feels your hand on the scale, and they check out right when you need them locked in.

The subtler failure is the break that’s too small to matter. The characters have a spat, cool off for a scene and a half, and reconcile before any real dread accumulates. That’s not a break, it’s a speed bump. For the ending to earn its keep, the reader has to sit in the wreckage long enough to genuinely feel the loss. A break that resolves before the reader’s stomach has time to drop didn’t risk anything, and a story that risks nothing can’t move anybody.

And the one that fools tenderhearted writers: the break where nobody’s at fault, where it’s all just sad circumstance and crossed wires and everybody behaving beautifully the whole way down. Sympathetic, sure. Toothless, also. It lets both characters off the hook, and a hook nobody’s on is a hook that holds no weight. The breaks that mean something implicate the people in them. Somebody does the wounding thing. Somebody picks the fear over the person standing right in front of them. That’s what has to get forgiven later, and forgiveness of nothing is worth exactly nothing.

Today’s exercise: the fault-line trace

This one works backward from your break, and it works even if your break isn’t written yet, because it tells you what the break has to be.

Start with your two leads and write down, for each, the one wound that runs underneath everything. The old injury that shapes how they protect themselves. If you don’t know it cold, that gap is today’s finding, because a break can’t grow from a wound you haven’t defined.

Now look at your break, or the space where it should be, and answer three things:

Who breaks it, and why? If the answer involves an outside force, an ex, a coincidence, a job, a misunderstanding, ask whether you’re using that external thing to avoid making one of your characters do the hard, revealing thing themselves. Note where the author’s hand is doing work the character should be doing.

Does the break run along a fault line you already built? Draw the line from each character’s wound to the rupture. If you can trace it, “this wound leads to this exact break,” you’re solid. If the line doesn’t connect, your break is imported, and you’ve found the seam.

How long does the reader sit in the loss? Count the scenes between the break and the first real move toward reconciliation. If it’s less than a couple, the break may be too small to generate the dread the ending needs to pay off.

What you want at the end of this is a straight line from wound to break, a rupture your own character causes, and enough room after it for the loss to register. Wherever that line bends or breaks, that’s the Wednesday work.

Tomorrow, the trap almost everybody falls into, which is fixing it too soon.

Three days out. Don’t get locked out of the room.

Quick reminder that lands harder every day this week: the sprint Zoom links only exist in the #20kin5Days member chat inside Filthy Fiction with Feelings. of ass in seat time ahead of us. I want to take this time to get to know each other, especially if you’re going to be in the room with me this week. Introduce yourself. Tell us what you’re working on. Tell us what you’re scared of finishing and what you’re excited to burn through.

Here’s how it goes:

Every morning of the challenge, paid subscribers get a link to the Zoom room and a motivational post straight to their inboxes. That same link and post will also be sitting in the member chat, so you’ve got no excuse to miss it.

Live write-ins happen twice a day, 11 AM and 7 PM EST. Come to one, come to both, come to none and just write on your own clock. That part is up to you.

There are no replays. The magic of this challenge lives in being present in the room, and I want this space to stay inviting enough that people actually feel free to show up as themselves and write messy, ugly first drafts without an audience watching later.

Now let’s talk about the space piece, because I need you to actually read it and not just skim past it.

I built this challenge for racialized, queer, disabled, and otherwise marginalized authors. All are welcome, but that’s who this room is for and who will be centered. If you’re on some bullshit, or you’re thinking about signing up just to come be a douche nozzle, don’t. We don’t take kindly to that kind of shit round here, and I mean that sincerely.

This challenge is built for romance (and all of her subgenres) authors and the folks writing romance-related content alongside us- bloggers, journalists, podcasters, and other longform creators who live and breathe this genre same as I do. That’s my house, and if you’re one of us, you’re welcome at the table.

Twenty thousand words is the goal, not a hard rule carved into stone somewhere. The real goal is dedicating actual time in the chair, hands on keys, showing up for the story even when the story is being difficult. Progress counts. All of it.

Don’t forget to grab your snacks and your drinks ahead of time! Ass-in-seat time requires sustenance, and a dehydrated writer is a cranky writer. Trust me, I make this mistake every challenge and end up DoorDashing… don’t be me!

Introduce yourself below. Who are you? What are you working on? What does finishing this thing mean to you?

xo, Tasha

Prep Week Day 4 | The Cooldown: Why the First Reconciliation Shouldn't Work

The break hurts to write, so the natural impulse is to fix it fast.

Tasha L.

Get them back together, ease the ache, put the good feeling back where it was. That impulse is the single most common way writers deflate their own endings, because the first reach back across the gap usually shouldn’t work, and rushing past that costs you the most important change in the whole book.

The cooldown is the false reconciliation. The attempt that fails. It’s the least understood beat in the romance arc and one of the most powerful, because it’s where the actual transformation gets forced. Think of the version of the couple who gets back together for one hopeful minute and then falls apart worse than before, because neither of them fixed the thing that broke them in the first place. They just missed each other and mistook missing for healing. Skip this beat and your ending reads like the couple reunited because the page count ran out, not because either of them became a person who could make it work.

What a cooldown actually is

The cooldown is the couple trying to reconcile before either of them has changed, and discovering that wanting each other back isn’t enough. They reach for each other across the wreckage of the break, and it doesn’t hold, because the thing that broke them is still fully intact. Nothing has been resolved internally. They’ve just gotten lonely and scared and reached for the familiar, and the same wound that caused the break causes the reconciliation to collapse a second time.

This failed reach is not filler between the break and the ending. It’s the mechanism that makes the ending possible. The first attempt has to fail so that both characters run out of road, so they finally understand that wanting it isn’t sufficient and something in them has to actually shift. The cooldown is the pressure that forces the internal change the resolution is going to require.

Why it matters more than writers give it credit for

Without a cooldown, the internal change has no reason to happen. If the couple breaks and then simply reunites, you’re telling the reader that the wound didn’t matter, that people get what they want without having to change to deserve it. Readers may accept that in the moment because they want the happy ending, but the ending lands soft and half-earned, and they close the book vaguely unsatisfied without always knowing why.

The cooldown is also brutally honest about how getting back together actually works between real people, which is a big part of why it hits. Real couples don’t fix a deep rupture on the first try. They circle it, they try and blow it, they reach for each other way too early and tear the wound right back open before either one has done a lick of the work. A cooldown that puts that failure on the page reads true in a way a clean instant reunion never will, and that truth is what makes a reader trust you enough to actually cry when the real ending comes.

How to spot where yours is real and where it’s faking

The first tell is whether you have one at all. A lot of drafts go straight from break to grand reunion with nothing in between, which means the transformation got skipped and the ending is running on fumes. If your couple breaks and the next real relationship beat is the happy ending, that absence is your finding.

If you do have a reconciliation attempt, test whether it fails for the right reason. A real cooldown fails because the underlying wound is still active, because one or both of them is still the unchanged person who caused the break. A fake cooldown fails because of another external hiccup, more bad timing, another misunderstanding, one more interfering side character, which just repeats the plot-contrivance problem in a new outfit and delays the ending without deepening anything.

The other failure is the cooldown that succeeds when it has no business succeeding. The couple hits a rough patch, talks it through like two reasonable adults on a podcast, and reconciles for good, all before either one has genuinely changed a thing. It resolves the tension way too early and leaves the whole back of the book standing around with nothing to do, which is its own flavor of sag. If your two get back together and stay together with a hundred pages left and no internal work left to do, you resolved on your schedule instead of the story’s, and the ending is going to read like a formality nobody needed to sit through.

Today’s exercise: the premature-reconciliation check

Locate the stretch between your break and your final reunion. Whatever lives in that space is what you’re auditing.

Answer three questions.

Is there a failed reconciliation attempt in there at all? If the space is empty, if you jump from break straight to happy ending, write that down. You’ve found a missing beat, and it’s a load-bearing one.

If there is an attempt and it fails, why does it fail? Name the reason in one sentence. If that sentence points to an external thing, more bad timing, another mix-up, a meddling third party, you’ve got a contrivance doing the job character change should be doing. If the sentence points to the wound, “they reached for each other, but Character A still couldn’t do the one thing that broke them,” you’re working with the real material.

If there’s an attempt and it succeeds, check the page count and the internal work. How much book is left after they reconcile, and has either character actually changed at the point they get back together? If there’s a lot of runway left and no change has happened yet, you resolved too early, and the slack you feel in the back third is the cost.

What you’re listening for underneath all three is a simple thing. The first reconciliation should fail because these people aren’t ready yet, and that failure should finally be what makes them ready. Wherever your draft shortcuts that, that’s Thursday.

Tomorrow we earn the ending, which is a different thing entirely from reaching it.

Two days out. This is the part you don’t want to miss.

We sprint Monday, and I’ll say it plainly one more time because it matters: the only way to get the Zoom links is the #20kin5Days member chat inside Filthy Fiction with Feelings. Nowhere else. Not your inbox, not Notes, not a last-minute scramble in my mentions Monday morning. restraint.

It reads as two people who are never going to get anywhere, and a reader will only sit in that pot for so long before they wander off to a book where somebody finally says the thing. You know the couple everybody swore they’d tune in for and then quit on around season four because the writers kept finding reasons to keep them apart? That’s a simmer with no payoff, and it’s exhausting. The simmer earns its keep by promising a break. The boil is where you pay up.

The boil is the scene where the thing they’ve both been dancing around finally gets said out loud. Not resolved. Said. The difference matters, and we’ll get to it, but understand up front that this is the moment the relationship stops being a holding pattern and becomes a story that’s actually going somewhere.

What a boil actually is

A boil is the collision that comes out of intimacy, not out of plot. Two people have been close enough, long enough, that the pressure they’ve been managing finally exceeds what either of them can hold, and it comes out. Sometimes as a fight. Sometimes as a confession neither of them planned to make. Sometimes as a kiss that wasn’t supposed to happen and now can’t un-happen. The form varies. The function is fixed. Something true breaks the surface, and neither person can pretend afterward that it didn’t.

The engine here is that real intimacy is dangerous. The closer two people get, the more each of them has to lose, and the more the buried things start pushing to get out. A boil is what happens when proximity does its job. It is the natural consequence of a simmer that was actually generating heat, which is why yesterday matters so much to today. If the simmer was fake, the boil has nothing to boil.

Why it matters more than writers give it credit for

Writers avoid the boil because confrontation is uncomfortable to write, so they defer it, soften it, or stage a smaller version and tell themselves they’ll do the real one later. The draft goes slack in exactly the spot where it should turn, and that slackness is a big part of what people are feeling when they say their middle sags.

The boil is also where you separate a real relationship from two characters who are simply scheduled to end up together. Conflict born of intimacy deepens a bond even when it looks like it’s threatening it, because now these two people know something raw about each other they didn’t know before. They can’t go back to polite. The stakes just went up, and the reader feels the floor of the relationship shift under them, which is the sensation they came to the genre for.

How to spot where yours is real and where it’s faking

The cleanest test is where the conflict comes from. Real relationship conflict comes from character, from the wound and the fear and the thing each person can’t say. Fake conflict comes from plot convenience, and it has a signature. It’s the misunderstanding that one straight sentence would clear up, the overheard half-conversation taken the worst possible way, the text meant for someone else. If your boil could be defused by your characters simply behaving like functional adults for ninety seconds, it’s not a boil, it’s a contrivance, and readers have been rolling their eyes at that exact move since before you were born.

Here’s the harder version, the one that fools good writers. You can build a boil out of genuine character material and still stage it wrong by letting the characters be too articulate. A boil where both people calmly and completely explain their feelings in well-formed paragraphs isn’t a boil, it’s a couples’ therapy demo reel. The heat comes from the fact that people in the grip of something true are terrible at saying it. They say the wrong part first. They aim at the small thing because the big thing is too dangerous to look at directly. They get mean to protect the soft spot. If your confrontation reads like somebody’s therapist was in the room supervising, the pressure isn’t real yet, because nobody in their whole chest that upset is choosing their words that carefully.

And the failure that runs the other direction: the boil that goes big and loud and changes absolutely nothing. They scream, somebody slams a door, and by the next scene they’re right back where they started like the whole thing was a bad dream. That blew through and left no mark. A real boil is irreversible. Something is known now that wasn’t known before, and neither person can un-know it, no matter how much they’d like to. If your characters could reasonably pretend the fight never happened, it didn’t cost them anything, and a confrontation that costs nothing isn’t a turn. It’s noise.

Today’s exercise: the boil test

Find the scene in your draft where your central relationship conflict comes to a head. If you can’t find one, that’s your result for the day, and it’s a loud one, so note it and read on.

If you have the scene, put it through three questions:

Where does the conflict come from? Trace it back. If the honest root is “they misunderstood something” or “somebody didn’t get the full story,” write down what one sentence from one character would have resolved it. If that sentence exists and nothing in the scene makes it impossible to say, your conflict is a contrivance and you now know exactly where the repair work is.

Are the characters too articulate? Read their dialogue in the heat of it. Is anyone saying the wrong thing, aiming at the small target, getting defensive or cruel? Or are they explaining themselves in clean, complete, reasonable paragraphs? Mark every line that sounds more composed than a person in that much feeling would actually be.

Is it irreversible? Look at the scene right after. Could the characters plausibly go back to how they were before the confrontation? If yes, the boil didn’t do its job, because a real one changes what’s possible between them from that point forward.

The scene that comes out of this with a character-rooted conflict, messy in-the-moment dialogue, and no way back is a working boil. Anything short of that is a diagnosis, and it’s pointing straight at your Tuesday.

Tomorrow it gets worse for everybody, which is the point, because the ending only means something if the reader first believes it might not come.

Four days out. Let’s talk logistics.

The live sprints start Monday, and there’s exactly one way to get into them: the #20kin5Days member chat inside Filthy Fiction with Feelings. to the resolution that earns the ending. Each one teaches you to spot where your own draft may have gone cold, and hands you an exercise that outputs something you carry into the sprint. Diagnosis is the whole job this week. The fixing is what we do together in the room.

If you ran the Dormancy Diagnostic with us back in April, this is the next move. We figured out why a stalled draft goes dormant: root rot, compacted soil, the wrong season, frost damage, no root system. Five reasons a draft quietly stops moving. This week we go somewhere more specific, into the one system that keeps a romance alive from the middle to the end, which is heat. April told you why your draft went dormant. Heatwave week shows you where the wanting went cold and how to tell, stage by stage, so you walk into the sprint knowing exactly which fire went out. If you missed April, you don’t need it. This stands on its own.

Simmer: Why Wanting Is the Whole Point

Somewhere along the way we picked up the idea that tension is the boring part. The wait before the good stuff. The throat-clearing you get through so you can finally reach the kiss, the confession, the bedroom. Writers internalize this, and it wrecks their drafts because they start treating every unresolved moment as an obstacle to clear, rather than as the thing readers actually paid for. They rush the couple to the good part like it’s a chore to get through, then can’t figure out why the back half of the book flatlined.

Old salesmen used to say you sell the sizzle, not the steak. In romance, the sizzle is the wanting, and the steak is the getting, and the reader came for the sizzle. They are not turning pages to find out whether two people end up together, because they already know. The genre made a promise and the reader trusts it. Nobody picked up your book worried it might end in a funeral. What they came for is the wanting, drawn out and specific and almost unbearable, because being inside somebody else’s longing is one of the few legal ways to feel that much without the hangover.

Think about the shows that had you in a chokehold for years. The pull was never the resolution. It was the not-yet. Mulder and Scully spent the better part of a decade almost, and the second the “almost” resolved, half the audience lost the plot. The wanting was the whole engine, and everybody involved knew it, which is why they protected that “almost” like it was the crown jewels. Your draft deserves the same protection.

So the simmer is not the setup. It is the meal.

What a simmer actually is

A simmer is two people who want each other and cannot, or will not, act on it yet, plus a reason for the gap that holds up under weight. All three parts have to be present. The want, the barrier, and the pressure between them.

The want has to be specific to these two people, not generic attraction you could paste into any book. “Character A thought Character B was hot” is not a want. It’s a casting note. “Character A caught herself watching the way Character B handled the people nobody else had patience for, and hated how much she wanted to be handled like that too” is a want, because it tells you what this person is starved for and why this specific other person is the one who could feed it. Desire in romance is never really about the face. It’s about the thing the other person has that your character has been going without.

The barrier has to be active, which means it shows up and does work in the scene in front of you, not just in the backstory. And the pressure is what happens when the want and the barrier grind against each other on the page, in real time, while the characters are doing something as ordinary as splitting a check.

Why it matters more than writers give it credit for

Tension is the engine that pulls a reader from one page to the next, and the simmer is where that engine runs cheapest. A scene where two people want each other and can’t act on it generates forward pressure without anything “happening,” which is the closest thing to free energy the form allows. Two people bickering over how to load a dishwasher, with all that want and all that barrier humming underneath it, will out-read a car chase in a romance every single time. That’s the whole trick of a good will-they-won’t-they. Nothing is happening, and you cannot look away.

Lose the simmer, and you have to manufacture momentum some other way, usually by throwing plot at the problem. That is how you end up with a kidnapping in chapter nineteen of what was supposed to be a quiet small-town romance. The plot didn’t fail. The tension left, and plot rushed in to fill the vacuum, and now your cozy has a body in it.

How to spot where yours is real and where it’s faking

A real simmer has an active barrier, and this is the single most useful test you can run this week. The reason these two can’t be together is doing work in every scene, not sitting in a character’s history where the reader can’t feel it. Maybe one of them is technically still with someone else. Maybe the power dynamic makes it a firing offense. Maybe the last time either of them trusted somebody it cost them something they’re still paying down. Whatever it is, it presses on the characters even when they’re just standing in a kitchen talking about nothing, and you can feel it leaning on them.

A fake simmer is two people who could resolve the entire thing with one honest sentence and simply don’t, because you the writer need them not to yet. That is not tension. That is a scheduling problem. Readers clock it instantly even when they can’t name it, because the fake version makes the characters read as either oblivious or cowardly, and nobody wants to spend three hundred pages rooting for two people who won’t use their words. The real version makes them read as human. The moment you catch yourself thinking “they just won’t bring it up,” stop right there and check whether there’s an actual reason living in the scene or whether you’re just stalling and calling it slow burn.

There’s a second, quieter failure worth naming, because it’s the one that slips past good writers. It’s the simmer where the want is real and the barrier is real but nothing grinds, because your two people are never actually in the same room doing something together. Longing at a distance is a mood, not a scene. Your girl can sit in her apartment aching over him for forty pages, and none of it counts, because heat comes from proximity plus obstacle: two people close enough to feel it and blocked from doing a thing about it. If your leads keep pining in separate zip codes, you’ve got ingredients and no fire.

Today’s exercise: the simmer audit

Do this on your actual draft, not in your head, because the whole point is to see what’s really on the page versus what you’ve been assuming is there.

Pick three scenes from the first third of your book where your two leads share the page. For each one, write down four things in plain language.

What does Character A want from Character B in this scene, specifically? Not “connection.” Something you could photograph. If the honest answer is “nothing, they’re just here,” flag it.

What is stopping them from getting it, and is that barrier visible in this scene or is it buried in backstory the reader can’t see? If you have to reach back three chapters to explain why they can’t act, the barrier isn’t active, it’s theoretical.

Are they physically together and doing something, or are they apart and thinking about each other? Circle the ones where they’re apart.

Could one honest conversation resolve the tension in this scene? If yes, and there’s no concrete reason that conversation can’t happen, mark it. That’s a scheduling problem wearing a tension costume.

Now look at your three scenes side by side. Count how many have a specific want, an active on-page barrier, and the two of them actually together. That number is how many real simmer scenes you’ve got in your opening. If it’s three, your heat is on and the rest of this week is about sustaining it. If it’s one or zero, you just found out why the middle went cold, because a book with no simmer in the first act has nothing to lose in the second. You can’t drain a pot that was never full.

Bring that number into the sprint. It tells you exactly what your Monday needs to be.

Tomorrow we turn the heat up, because a simmer that never breaks isn’t restraint. It’s a pot somebody forgot on the stove.

One thing before you go, so nobody’s scrambling on the 15th.

The live sprint Zoom links live in one place and one place only: the #20kin5Days member chat inside Filthy Fiction with Feelings, which is paid-subscriber territory. They don’t go out in an email blast, they don’t get posted to Notes, and they won’t be floating around anywhere public. Two sprints a day, 11 AM and 7 PM EST, both linked in the chat, all week.

That’s on purpose, and not because I like a velvet rope. Open Zoom links are how you end up with a stranger in your writing room doing something nobody wants to see, and I’m not about to run a call where twelve people are trying to draft and one troll is testing what he can get away with. Keeping the links behind the paid wall means the room stays exactly what it’s supposed to be: writers who paid to be there, doing the work, safe enough to leave their cameras on and their guard down. The wall isn’t the point. The room it protects is.

So if you’re planning to sprint with us live, upgrade before Monday. Prep Week is free and stays free. The room is the part you buy, and it’s worth it.

Filthy Fiction with Feelings is a reader-supported publication.
